Brakes squeaking: causes & is it safe to drive?

Quick answer

Can I keep driving?
If you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, they should be inspected. Squealing is listed among the brake warning signs, along with pulling to one side, low or hard pedal feel, grabbing, vibration, and an illuminated brake warning light.[1]

Brake / ABS issue: have it inspected promptly.
Only for the specific vehicles listed — not general advice:
Toyota only Brake pad wear limit indicator squealing: have the brake pads checked and replaced as soon as possible.[2]
GM vehicles Brake wear indicator tabs rubbing the rotor cause chirping, squealing or whistling — a sign the pads need service.[3]
What a symptom alone can’t tell you
'As soon as possible'; dangerous to drive past pad/disc wear limits[2]

Check first: Note which brake warning signs apply (noise, pulling, low or hard pedal, grabbing, vibration, warning light). Squealing on its own means the pads should be inspected — pad thickness cannot be judged from outside the wheel, so this is a shop check, not a self-check.[1]
What a repair will cost varies by vehicle, region and shop, and no official source publishes a price for a single fault — so this site does not estimate one. We publish only figures we can trace to an official document.
