Grinding noise when braking: causes & is it safe to drive?

Quick answer

Can I keep driving?
Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the "metal-to-metal" point, which can be potentially dangerous and lead to a more costly repair bill. Grinding is the noise brakes make at that stage.[1]

Brake / ABS issue: have it inspected promptly.
Only for the specific vehicles listed — not general advice:
Toyota only Scraping noise (brake pad wear limit indicator): have the brake pads checked and replaced as soon as possible.[2]
What a symptom alone can’t tell you
Dangerous to drive when pad/disc wear limits exceeded; rotor damage may result[2]
2022 Toyota Camry Owner's Manual OM06244U (year mapping per Helm listing; manual is Camry-specific), p.199
Check first: Grinding is not a self-check symptom: the pad or wear-limit condition behind it can only be confirmed by inspecting the brakes. Have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible, and avoid letting it reach metal-to-metal.[1]
What a repair will cost varies by vehicle, region and shop, and no official source publishes a price for a single fault — so this site does not estimate one. We publish only figures we can trace to an official document.
